Iranian Tennis Player Aravane Rezai
Jun 22Wimbledon has arrived and it will probably rival #iranelection for top spot in the trending topics sidebar on Twitter. As of this moment 909 am central U.S. time on June 22, the name Aravane Rezai only has a couple current Twitter search results. I think Twitterers, especially followers of #iranelection will soon change that.
Aravane Rezai is a French tennis player of Iranian descent. She is currently ranked 45th in the world. In both 2001 and 2005, Aravane competed for Iran in the Women’s Islamic Games, winning gold medals each time. She last competed at the AEGON Classic last week where she bested Mariana Duque Marino and Alla Kudryavtseva before being outsted by 19th ranked Na Li 5-7, 4-6.
Might Aravane Rezai become a crowd favorite on the green courts of Wimbledon? She will be competing on Mousavi green all week. We’ll see if she adorns green of any kind, showing solidarity with the protesters in Iran, as she takes to the court this week. Unlike the Iranian soccer team which had a few players show their support of the Iranian protesters last week in a match televised in Iran. Aravane, if she decides to wear green, will not be forced to remove it in between sets.
Aravane’s first match is today at noon on court 12 vs. Ayumi Mortia of Japan. You can follow results at the official Wimbledon page here.
